250 italians repatriated today in Italy

Unprecedented operation by italian Govt in Africa

17-05-2020 by Freddie del Curatolo

Twelve buses in four different locations on the Kenyan coast, 250 compatriots transferred to Mombasa airport with the lockdown of the counties, the Honorary Consul of Malindi with his Jersey Chiefs on and other assistants and volunteers in the field, the involvement of the most important and professional airport transfer and excursion company in the coastal region, the Southern Sky Safaris, plus a local charter flight from Lamu and another bus from Nairobi.
These are the data of the largest repatriation operation of the Italian Government ever carried out in Kenya, set up by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs with the organization, coordination and logistics of the Italian Embassy in Kenya.
Certainly also the most important in the whole African continent by our Government in times of emergency Covid-19.
An organization that started as early as last week, with the request for all the permits that the emergency requires for travel, and the guarantee of maximum safety conditions so that the long bus column could face the 120 kilometers of road and numerous checkpoints in total control.
"It has been a not indifferent and unprecedented organizational effort in Kenya - commented Ambassador Alberto Pieri - with lockdowns between individual regions and curfews throughout the country, we have gathered our compatriots from different destinations and gathered those of the tourist resorts on the coast so that we can safely reach Mombasa airport, thanks also to the availability of local authorities. An operation and coordination that we will repeat on Thursday 21 with a second repatriation flight".
Last March 31, in fact, on the occasion of the first return flight organized by the Farnesina, the County of Kilifi had not yet been armored for the Covid-19 emergency, so every tourist from resorts or holidaymakers from private homes had been able to reach Mombasa International Airport on their own. This time instead the Italians stranded in Malindi, Watamu, Mambrui and Kilifi were directed and gathered to travel together on large buses whose capacity was halved, accommodating only 20 people each. The County of Kilifi, where our compatriots are based, some of whom were waiting for a repatriation flight for a month and a half, is totally armored and also for this reason there has not been a case of coronavirus for two months.
The collection from the various departure stations was quick and quiet, in Malindi the Bar Bar even opened specifically at 6 am for the last Kenyan breakfast with espresso and brioche and travel sandwiches.
The bus column arrived around 11 am in Mombasa, where a Boeing of the NEOS company was waiting for them and took off around 12.55 pm. It will arrive in Malpensa in the late afternoon and then continue to Rome Fiumicino airport, where it will land around midnight.
