Farewell Micaela, italian volunteer in Likoni

Anarchist, extreme but with a big heart for children

11-05-2020 by Freddie del Curatolo

He had a strong character, anarchic and devoted to sacrifice, even extreme, almost self-harm.
So was Micaela De Gregorio, the brianza volunteer who suddenly disappeared yesterday in Mombasa, unmanageable but authentic.
It sounds absurd, premature and sad that she left on the very same day of the liberation of another stubborn volunteer, Silvia Romano. But maybe it's not an accident.
Malindikenya.net wrote about her in 2015, after learning of her radical choice to sell the few things she had accumulated in her "previous life" in Italy and move to Mombasa.
A studio apartment and a few other things, her mother to say goodbye and off to a volunteer adventure in the difficult neighborhood of Likoni, beyond the ferry on the island of Mombasa and the decency of a dignified life for so many children of what is almost a slum in Kenya's second city.
After various experiences, even conflicting but always faced with courage, sometimes even bravado, he founded a small non-profit association, "Likoni Yetu" and leaned on a children center. Those who knew her or came into contact with her via social networks, where she was very active and often very polemical, could not help but notice her big heart and her African way of life, embracing the cause of poverty like a modern Mother Teresa who often even neglected herself.
After our article we felt often and she showed us her choice and the difficulty of dealing with the Kenyan system, made up of corruption and bureaucracy, with the latter which when it works also appears fair and better structured than in Italy.
Micaela was someone who "didn't fit in", we clashed several times (always with great respect) and even on our FB pages she was always ready to have her say and argue virtually with anyone who didn't consider her as someone who was "in the field" and put her face and soul into it.
So she had done by talking about Silvia Romano, whom she had met during the period in which the Milanese girl had also found herself as a volunteer at Likoni.
And that's how she left, neglecting the aftermath of a domestic accident of which she had also spoken publicly, when she was only 51 years old.
With her extremism, her crooked moons, her antagonistic and in my opinion wrong idea of volunteering, but also with her heart bigger than the normality of life, Micaela will be missed by many, especially by her children for whom maybe there was no hope, but a crazy, ramshackle, nice white mother.
