A sudden fire devastated this morning the Italian Children Centre Asante Sana in Mambrui, destroying the women's dormitory of the structure.
In a few minutes the flames reduced beds, mattresses, pillows, mosquito nets and support beams to ashes, which burned down the roof. The firemen arrived and had water too, but the bulk of the damage had already been done. Since there was no makuti, at least the fire did not spread to other areas of the important solidarity centre in Mambrui.
Fortunately in this period the structure, which houses more than one hundred children and offers them teaching with a school parified within the center and to eat with a large refectory, in addition to having offices and services, is not attended by many schoolchildren who are almost all on vacation in the villages of relatives. There are also many small students from the area who come from outside.
"We only had the youngest orphans with us, but they were all rescued - confirms Mama Piera Chiodi, the volunteer who created and has been running the structure for years, in tears - but the damage is considerable.
Now for "Mama" Piera is a total emergency, because the school will start in a few days, on January 6 and the girls have no space to sleep, nor a bed.
