Highest number of cases in Kenya as Govt explore the Coast

Health CS in Mombasa, first Covid-19 death in Lamu

10-07-2020 by redazione

The Kenyan Health Cabinet Secretary was yesterday, Thursday 9 July, on the coast to assess the containment and care of Covid-19 in view of the transfer of many Kenyans to the sea for the summer holidays. As part of his county tour to see for himself the health situation in every region of the country, Minister Mutahi Kagwe was in Mombasa and from there he announced the highest number of cases of virus positive cases ever recorded in just 24 hours since Covid-19 arrived in Kenya on March 13.
There are 447 newly infected, and even the percentage compared to the swabs analyzed is the highest ever, because only 3803 tests were carried out.
The total cases now rise to 8,975 and 10,000, defined as a first possible wake-up call for the country, is no longer so far away. The opening of the county borders in Nairobi and Mombasa certainly does not help to bring down these numbers, which are still not worrying but rising.
According to the Minister, Mombasa will have to be very careful with the arrival of thousands of visitors as soon as the airports and the fast railways open.
Yesterday, among other things, the coast reported the first official case of death with Covid-19 outside Mombasa County: it was recorded at the district hospital of Lamu. The Coronavirus recently arrived in the north coast archipelago, until now only 5 cases had been reported and none of them were in serious condition.
In the whole of Kenya 3 more patients have died, which with Lamu's hospital brings the number of deaths from the pandemic disease to 173.
At the same time, another 64 people were declared cured by Covid-19 and discharged from the health facilities where they were hospitalized.
With regard to Mombasa, which recorded only 14 cases out of yesterday's 447, Kagwe praised the work of local institutions and Governor Ali Hassan Joho, especially with regard to the government's stipulation that there must be at least 300 beds in each county in the intensive care unit (ICU).
So far, however, only 26 counties have complied with the Ministry of Health's requirements for beds in isolation and staff recruitment. Another 21 do not yet meet the required standards. Among these, on the coast, Tana River County and Lamu are not yet properly equipped.
"The sooner we can adhere to various measures, the faster we can boost the economy and reactivate international tourism," said Kagwe.
