Holidays in Kenya after Covid-19

Suggestions about the future of tourism sector

30-04-2020 by Freddie del Curatolo

The future of tourism in Kenya after the Covid-19 is not only about a "business" of a few, let alone an elite of entrepreneurs and professionals, but it can bring to its knees an industry that produces more than 10% of the national GDP and 40% of the coastal one and that gives work to more than 1.5 million permanent employees plus many seasonal workers in the country.
For this reason the Minister of Tourism Najib Balala is working with his team and a number of international experts to understand where they will need to intervene and direct their marketing, infrastructure and philosophy efforts to make the country still as attractive as it was until two months ago.
Malindikenya.net also participated in the Webinair conference with the Minister and some managers of important travel and hospitality platforms such as Tripadvisor (in attendance were managers of the Africa area and market research area) and McKenzie, as well as local operators.
The data regarding the preferences of those who would like to go on holiday after the emergency and forced quarantine, do not bode well, especially with regard to air travel and this could be expected.
However, say the Tripadvisor experts, Kenya with Sub-Saharan Africa is one of the most clicked areas for holiday expectations in the immediate post Covid-19 period, which means about three to four months.
The reason is to be found in the desire for freedom, to "detach" from the experience lived within four walls and in the natural inclination to uncontaminated spaces that Kenya, its savannah but also other landscapes, including long strips of sand can inspire. In addition, it will be important to focus on the beneficial effects of the sea and warm places. However, for a serious recovery, it is advisable to focus immediately on domestic tourism, because the online platform's projections include regional rather than international travel, at least until October, and preferences for holidays by car.
What can Kenya do to be ready for the changes of course that post-emergency will require?
According to Minister of Tourism Balala, it will be necessary to strengthen e-commerce and continue with promotion and organization through the internet.
"That's why we are working to have faster and more stable connections in every corner of the country - confirmed Balala - and soon thanks to Google we will have the famous balloons in space that will give the possibility to spread the 4G signal all over East Africa".
According to McKenzie, within six months tourism will return to Kenya even if the recovery will be slow.
"The critical points are represented not only by the prices of aircraft, which will have to observe social distances and strict rules of sanitization - they explain - but also the tourism industry will have to be ready to offer holiday packages where health insurance and security measures for tourists are highlighted. In addition to another very important aspect, the "flexible cancellation policing", i.e. the possibility of cancelling the holiday and being reimbursed in large part or in full in the event of other emergencies not depending on the customer.
