Kenyan e-passport, 8 months more to do it

Government gives time up to march 2020

26-07-2019 by redazione

Eight months more time for Kenyan citizens to convert their old passport to the new e-passport, the digitally readable electronic microchip document. The government had set 31 August of this year as the deadline for changing its document valid for expatriation, but President Kenyatta, following a directive of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs already proposed a few weeks ago by his Deputy William Ruto, has moved the deadline to next year.
Government spokesman Cyrus Oguna confirmed that Kenyan citizens will be able to travel abroad with their old passport until March 1, 2020.
Oguna has however urged Kenyans to take advantage of the extension but also not to wait until the last minute to apply for an e-passport. At the same time Kenyatta mandated Foreign Minister Monica Juma to coordinate Kenya's embassies in foreign countries to facilitate the release of new e-passports to Kenyan citizens living abroad.
The electronic passports of the East African Community (EAC) came into force in August last year and initially it was set at twelve months to replace the old documents.
