Malindi Beachfront project almost done

Waiting for the jetty restyling and other works

23-11-2020 by Leni Frau

Malindi tries to make up the trick to welcome local tourism and prepare for when the period of international restrictions will be over and it will be safe to travel even in tourism havens.
The redevelopment project of Malindi's beachfront promenade, financed by the World Bank, is almost completed.
Although it is not exactly an example of wonder, especially when compared to other tourist destinations, it is worth remembering where we live and what has always been there instead of driveways, street lamps, benches, children's playgrounds, catering area and five-a-side football pitch.
Nothing.
Uncultivated land, two ruined football pitches, boathouses, bricks and lots of dirt.
Maybe they did a lot of "free and wild Africa" but for a town that still has a tourist vocation, even a lot of sadness.
Surely the "Beachfront" project is dedicated to communities, families, and walking, but with the evening lighting and the presence of more secure catering activities in an area that could still become a flywheel for other attractions and sources of income: small shops, kiosks, street food, boutiques, bars and more. Some are already under construction, others could be renovated, such as the former "Old Man and the sea" and the "Vasco Da Gama", closed for a long time and in need of much more than a repaint.
The seafront and the Shella district, which is also the original Melinde, the oldest area of today's Malindi, could in short become its fulcrum, its centre, its meeting place.
The World Bank's project also envisages the rebuilding of the pier, since the current wharf is not only badly damaged but also very ugly. An attractive fish market and other facilities should be built nearby.
Once the first phase has been completed, which includes the stretch from the pier to the Vasco Da Gama pier (the redevelopment of which we will talk about in the next few days), the World Bank has also planned a second phase which should create a promenade, a park and other places of leisure and entertainment, even in the seven kilometres leading to the mouth of the river Sabaki.
