Referendum: news for italians in Kenya

Advices for the vote of March 29th 2020

03-02-2020 by Ambasciata d'Italia in Kenya

The Central Referendum Office of the Court of Cassation, with an order filed on January 23, 2020, declared that the request for a referendum on the text of the constitutional law "amending Articles 56, 57 and 59 of the Constitution with regard to the reduction of the number of parliamentarians", complies with Article 138 of the Constitution and ascertained the legitimacy of the referendum question proposed by the same.
With the Decree of the President of the Republic of 28 January 2020, published in the Official Gazette no. 23 of 29 January 2020, the date of the popular confirmatory referendum, which will also involve Italian citizens resident abroad, has been set at 29 March 2020. Please note that the VOTE is a RIGHT protected by the Italian Constitution and that, according to Law no. 459 of 27 December 2001, Italian citizens resident abroad, registered on the electoral rolls, can VOTE BY POST. To this end, it is therefore recommended to check and regularize their personal data and address at their consulate.
It is ALTERNATIVE POSSIBLE, FOR ELECTORS RESIDENT EXTERIORS AND REGISTERED IN THE AIRE, TO CHOOSE VOTING IN ITALY ON ITS OWN JOINT ELECTORAL REGISTRATION, notifying the Consulate in writing of your choice (OPTION) by the 10th day after the call of the vote.
Voters who choose to vote in Italy during the next referendum, will receive from their respective Italian municipalities the notice card to vote at the polling stations in Italy. The choice (option) to vote in Italy applies only to a referendum. It is reiterated that in any case the option MUST BE VOTE AT THE CONSULAR OFFICE NO LATER THAN THE TEN DAYS SUCCESSED TO THE VOTING INDICATION, WITHIN DAY 8 FEBRUARY 2020.
This communication may be written on plain paper and - to be valid - must contain the name, surname, date, place of birth, place of residence and signature of the voter, accompanied by a copy of an identity document of the declarant. For such communication you can also use the appropriate form downloadable from the website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (www.esteri.it) or from the website of your Consular Office.
As required by current legislation, voters will be responsible for verifying that the option communication sent by post has been received in good time by their Consular Office. The choice to vote in Italy can be subsequently REVOCATED with a written communication to be sent or delivered to the Consular Office in the same manner and within the same time limits as for the exercise of the option. If you choose to return to Italy to vote, the Law does NOT provide for any kind of reimbursement for travel expenses incurred, but only tariff facilitations within the Italian territory. Only voters residing in countries where there are no conditions to vote by mail (Law 459/2001, art. 20, paragraph 1-bis) are entitled to reimbursement of 75% of the cost of the travel ticket, in economy class.
THE CONSULAR OFFICES ARE AVAILABLE FOR ANY FURTHER CLARIFICATION.
