Tourism in Kenya ready to restart: details

Waiting for beaches to be open tomorrow

31-07-2020 by redazione

After 128 days of lockdown, as announced yesterday Thursday, July 30 by Minister of Transport James Macharia, Kenya finally reopens its international doors tomorrow and is ready to receive travelers, business men (and women) and tourists with all precautions, including the inevitable certificate of negativity to the virus that must not be older than 96 hours.
Yesterday's day was full of meetings on meetings, especially virtual meetings on the "zoom" platform, to understand what will be the other rules and restrictions and what will be the opportunities to return, slowly but steadily and consistently, to sell the destination Kenya.
This is so that we do not believe that there are very few requests: there are many lovers of Sub-Saharan Africa, all over the world and there is a good slice of courageous people, as well as a growing number of deniers or simply people who prefer to live rather than cultivate fears even if not completely unjustified.
To these people, however, and this is what the requests of the trade associations are about 24 hours after the reopening, we must give certain answers, if possible without changing our minds every week.
The quarantine speech has been resolved (at least it seems, except for resounding second thoughts of Health Minister Mutahi Kagwe who, in the words of his colleague Macharia, would have given his consent). Faced with the evidence of the opportunity to reactivate air traffic and bring tourists back to the savannah, the sea, Nairobi and the country's natural havens, no foreigner with a Covid-19 Free certificate and who does not have a body temperature above 37 degrees, will have to observe the period of isolation that is required for now for those returning to Italy from non-European countries.
It should be noted, for Italians, that according to the Presidential Decree still valid until midnight today, you can not go to Africa for tourism, but this should only apply to "package holidays" or similar. It will be enough to motivate the trip in another way and there should be no problems, as far as Rome is concerned. In the meantime, however, the countries of the European Union are not mentioned among those that can immediately resume direct flights to Nairobi and Mombasa.
Among the internal issues that are very close to the hearts of hoteliers and residents of the coast is that of the beaches.
According to those who attended one of the important meetings yesterday in Nairobi, with the reopening of tourism should be reopened and give everyone the opportunity to attend them, obviously respecting the rules of the Covid-19 emergency, i.e. social distances and masks (except in water where you are required to distance yourself anyway).
In Malindi and Watamu, after having carried out all the paperwork and adapted their facilities, the hotels that decided to wait until August 1st are ready to reopen, with precise requests that have been evaluated and should be put in place, such as the sale of alcohol for internal customers of the facilities and the possibility to keep the restaurants open even during curfew hours.
It is unthinkable that those who book a "full board" or even half board with dinner, should be forced to eat before 7 p.m., a new time decided by Kenyatta last Monday for the closure of the restaurants. From a document of the association of hoteliers, it seems that the idea of the Ministry of Health is to allow the use of alcohol in hotels, but only in the room, with "room service", and so it could be for dinner after 19. But even here the situation, trusting in the common sense of the Government after listening to the reasons of the tourism sector, is in progress.
