The joy of Giorgia for Maralal children

Alone, the italian girl created a project for street boys

Giorgia Zanin is one of the many examples of how active and conscious volunteering can give rise to a serious and well-structured project, but also of how Africa lived in its folds also love with the right predisposition, can change their lives and improve that of so many souls in disarray.
After her first volunteer experience in Kenya in 2009, the student from Conegliano Veneto got to know the reality of northern Kenya, stopping in Maralal, one of the reference towns of the remote, arid, poor but fascinating region of Samburu.
Right there today there is a fantastic reality of reception, rehabilitation and reintroduction into the society for street children called Kikora ("joy" in kiswahili).
A social project born from the passion, will and competence of a young Italian woman.
In Maralal converge young people who often flee from the miserable rural reality and from social and family conditions at the limit of tolerability. But in the town they often find only the street, the art of making do and drugs, risking soon to turn into very young, lost zombies.
I set foot in Kenya five years after my first experience", Giorgia tells Malindikenya.net, "when I did my internship for the Specialist Degree in Local Development at St. Martina CSA in Nyahururu, where I gained experience and collected data for my thesis on street children in Kenya. In those months I returned to visit Maralal and it was there that, seeing the reality of the many "street children", the first idea was born to try to do a project similar to that of Nyahururu to help these children".
So Giorgia returned to Italy, graduated and began to share her idea with other people, finding a comforting support.
"In June 2014 I was already ready to leave - admits Giorgia - I only knew that I was going to live in Maralal, in the middle of the Savannah, where I knew only a couple of people (including Chris who would later become my husband ... but I still did not know!). I was determined, my goal was to help street kids, that's all.
A few coins collected, a draft project plan that then clearly in the field would be adapted and modified, but the will and the skill to make it.
Giorgia begins to take an interest in the personal stories of children who slept on the veranda in front of the only supermarket in the area, to learn about their family situations.
In November 2014 Giorgia carries out her first activities with street children.
"They were with us only during the day and in the evening unfortunately they went back to the street because we did not yet have a place to make them sleep - reveals the girl - The construction of the structure that was to be used for the project was never ready and this accumulated various diplomatic problems that made me change the plans many times. Difficulties that for those who know these places are unfortunately the order of the day: people who offered to help but then wanted to take advantage of it, others who had it with me because I was determined not to waste the money of the project by inflating the pockets of someone ... and then I put the sticks between the wheels. So many problems and obstacles but the enthusiasm was stronger and pushed me to continue.
So Giorgia began to collaborate with a nascent Kenyan NGO, Advocacy & Development Initiative - Kenya (ADI-Kenya), founded by some friends. 2015 saw the start of a more structured project.
"But it was January - continues the story Giorgia - the first group of boys was ready to be inserted in school and we still could not find a center. So we rented a room for 20 euros a month. The owner had left her sofa inside and we placed the 6 mattresses on the floor, there was nothing else but at least we had a place where they could sleep at night! In March 2015 things start to turn out right, finally there is the first center where you can accommodate the street kids and in the afternoons do after-school activities for a larger group that includes both the now ex-street boys and other boys at risk who still lived in the family. "All the activities have always been carried out by the local staff, who were trained and followed up - the volunteer points out - a task that was not easy but certainly necessary to ensure the sustainability of the project. Now, more than 4 years later, we have managed to create a good group that starts to be autonomous and so I decided to move from Maralal to take care of other aspects of coordination of the project at a distance even if I am in daily contact with the staff through phone calls and video calls (technology in this case helps ...) Every day we try to improve and learn, we are a dynamic project that is looking for that winning formula to help street children to reintegrate into society.
