Kilifi is halfway between Mombasa and Malindi, at the outlet of an attractive creek which, for centuries, acted as a safe docking and stopping point for cargo boats. During the british colonialism, also a yacht club was created, the first of the kenyan coast. Until 1991, a ferry was necessary to go through Kilifi "creek", the Kilifi ferry, then the japanese built a bridge.
Kilifi village develops, in its part toward Malindi, up to the beautiful Bofa Beach, while Mnarani quarter extends in the south and includes the citadel ruins, approximately dating back to the XV century. Interesting is the ancient mosque, one of the first in Kenya, overlooking the village on the sea and surrounded with huge baobab trees. The growing of Kilifi, which is a chief town today, is due to the arrival of the foreigners, mainly english, during the Sixties and, precisely, to the laying up of the deep-sea fishing boats activity. Then, some hotels, also italian, were built and the realization of the bridge additionally turned the town into a crossroads and stopping point for the means of transport.
For over twenty years a couple of important elements for the local population were Kenya Cashnuts, a leading company manufacturing and distributing nuts and the Kilifi Plantation, a huge farm with fruit trees and animals. Nowadays Kilifi is the major milk supplier for a large part of the coast.
To discover: the small beaches sheer to the sea and the unexpected bays, like Takaungu, a few km south.
