Ecosustainable italian project for self-reliance of kenian people

20-02-2017 by Freddie del Curatolo

Italians in Kenya have done many good works.
There is so much solidarity with the Kenyan people and the social projects abound.
What comes from the heart, the generosity and the inability to turn his eyes on the other side is always commendable, even if between words and deeds there are half of so many obstacles.
The Africa adapt, to understand the problems of this country, immerse themselves in a completely different reality, get to give continuity to the projects.
After so many years one of the best non-profit organization rooted on the coast of Kenya, has completed a virtuous process for which has become a Non Governmental Organisation (NGO) and has been able to concentrate (after working so much in the field of education and health, in the field which continues to help) on a draft environmental-sustainability and self-reliance, increasing whole-conscious community.
The NGO is Karibuni Onlus and the community to Langobaya, villaggione 60 kilometers from Malindi, in the hinterland on the way to the Tsavo National Park.
Here stands the Karibuni Farm, a work involving the locals, creating awareness of the work of the earth and above all giving the know how and the elements to get to be able to grow by themselves.
Entering the farm, you can see the fruits of a daily work with method and dedication, thanks to the direction of Kanai, a Masai manager who has already become a kind of "Mayor" on the spot.
Cultivation of vegetables, tomatoes and all kinds of vegetables and fruit, with important numbers and direct sales at very low cost for locals who can then resell the products in the local markets.
Then there are the chickens and the chickens (and their eggs) and rabbits.
The water in Langobaya is one of the main problems. Especially in these last two years, he is struggling with an exceptional drought, the daughter of global climate change.
"This year, the water company has decided to take it to those who cultivate the land, and their primary concern in private households and farmers," says Kanai.
So Langobaya Karibuni had to do it alone, building wells and relying on a large project on the banks of the Galana River. An extreme empowerment project. Thirty-four small landowners who cultivate maize have been involved in the ambitious idea that is now a fantastic result: pieces of land with channeling water through a system of pumps and equitable irrigation that favors everyone equally. Karibuni puts electricity and other costs, and takes half the crop, redistributing equitably and selling it to cover the costs.
The farmers instead have three years to grow with Karibuni, learn how to grow in a responsible and lasting, and then go with their legs. Others will.
But the rules to follow are strict. Almost everyone understood.
To Langobaya farm is a model and is definitely worth a visit. Because on the tour, you eat centimeter scratch, delicious things!
