ELEZIONI

A quiet vote in almost all Kenya

60 per cent affluence, coast safe

10-08-2022 by redazione

An election day in Kenya that took place in the name of peace.
Many uttered this word instead of naming their favourite candidates.
There were few incidents and no deaths or serious injuries in the country and few disturbing riots, although tension surfaced in certain constituencies that were already problematic in themselves, such as Turkana, Mandera on the border with Somalia, Wajir and West Pokot.

In Mombasa, a parliamentary candidate of William Ruto's Uda party was arrested on charges of inciting the crowd at the polling station in the old city against his rivals, after making accusations of fraud against them. In Mombasa and Kakamega counties, tensions rose after an error in the printing of ballot papers meant that no votes could be cast to elect the governor. Incidents also occurred in Nakuru, where another Uda candidate was arrested by the police after beating and not lightly injuring a supporter of the opposing faction.

Now clearly the thought is on the day when the president will be proclaimed. Especially if there will be protests, petitions or accusations from one or the other political side, as happened in 2017 and in an even greater and hopefully unique form in the history of this country, in 2007-2008 when there were hundreds of deaths. But then there was a great tribal tension that today may only surface in parts of the Rift Valley, northwest Kenya.

In the rest of the country and in the capital Nairobi, the day passed peacefully and quietly. Particularly on the coast and in the tourist areas where people flocked mainly in the early hours of the morning and polling stations closed regularly at 5 p.m. In Malindi and Watamu no protests or intemperance of any kind were reported.

Meanwhile, the counting of ballots begins and the first significant data is expected this afternoon, although the final results could come between tomorrow and Friday. As a rule, the Independent Electoral Commission IEBC has until Tuesday 16 August to give the results. After the announcement of the presidential winner, there will be three days to submit any complaints and petitions, which must be assessed within 30 days.
The swearing-in ceremony for the new president must take place within 60 days of the election. For the dates of the eventual runoff, should one of the two candidates fail to exceed 50 per cent of the votes and have at least 25 per cent of the votes in at least 24 out of 47 counties, there will be a wait for the IEBC's decisions.
