Visas and permits in Kenya, all blocked

Tourist entrance still costs $50

15-11-2023 by redazione

All locked, for now visas and permits will not increase in Kenya.
The Ministry of Home Affairs has backtracked on its decisions to double the cost of tourist entry into the country from USD 50 to USD 100, along with a whole range of services and fees especially for Kenyan citizens, with increases from 30 per cent to as much as 150 per cent.
This came after a second petition against the ill-considered increases in paperwork and documents for Kenyans and foreigners through the immigration office was filed in the Kenyan High Court yesterday.
The petition, which follows the first request to annul the decisions published by the Ministry of Home Affairs in the Official Gazette on 6 November, asks for the increases to be reviewed as 'unconstitutional'.

Among the measures that had been taken, and then blocked by the Court, is precisely the doubling of the cost of the tourist visa for entry into the country (3 months extendable by another 3), and the same extension, which until now is free, would rise to 200 dollars (Kes. 30 thousand).
According to the applicants, as stated to the national media, there are grounds to prove that the ministry acted illegally by publishing the special notice in the Gazette.

Kenyans in particular are shocked by the tenfold cost of producing basic documents, such as birth, marriage and death certificates, educational qualifications and passports.
As for foreigners, it is not just the entry visa that is a concern, but the expected 150% increase in work and residence permits.
On 29 November, the High Court was supposed to rule on when it should make a decision, but instead the Minister of Home Affairs, Kithure Kindiki, postponed any new decision to 10 December, but according to Kenyan media, the new fees, suitably revised, will not come into effect until 1 January 2024.
So for now, the visa remains unchanged, as do other fees and service charges.
