Collision between minibus and bus in Kenya, 15 dead

No one was saved among the occupants of the matatu

Matatu versus bus at 2 a.m., all the occupants of the local 14-seater bus plus the driver died, while seven were seriously injured among the bus passengers, with another 38 people transported to hospital with wounds and bruises judged to be treatable.
Another tragic fatality took place this morning on Kenyan roads, specifically on the so-called highway connecting the towns of Eldoret and Nakuru, in north-western Kenya.

The police confirmed that the accident occurred around 2.45 a.m. in the Twin Bridge area.
The Classics Kings of Congo bus collided with a North Ways Shuttle Sacco, probably both coming at high speed in the dark of night.

Photos shared by the police show the bus badly damaged at the front, with the windscreen and lights off, while the matatu was completely deformed by the frontal impact. The tyres were also missing and debris was scattered on the road, posing a significant danger to other oncoming vehicles. Yet another massacre of innocents brings to the surface one of the country's biggest problems, that of road accidents that take more than 4,000 citizens every year.

The controls are lacking and are often opportunities for the authorities to collect bribes, instead of acting on the speed of drivers and the safety conditions of vehicles. Moreover, a few years ago public transport was banned from travelling in the dark to reduce the risks, but protests by public transport unions and passengers themselves had brought the situation back to the way it is now.
