There is also a plan for a solar park in Malindi, as well as a 4 billion euro dam in the north of the country and a geothermal plant that will irrigate an area more than twice the size of the Maasai Mara, in the agreement signed yesterday between Kenya and Britain on the sidelines of the Cop27 international climate change conference being held these days in Sharm El-Sheikh. British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak (a british citizen with Indian ancestry and Tanzanian and Kenyan roots) and Kenyan President William Ruto, met, the British High Commission in Nairobi reported, with the intention of creating a win-win partnership for both countries through "green" initiatives that produce renewable energy and can create investment particularly in agriculture and transportation. Also planned are the upgrading of the Menengai geothermal facilities in the Rift Valley and and a €300 million investment in a climate-resilient agricultural hub for the Lake Victoria region, plus other smaller projects involving the ecological regeneration of Nairobi, including a new central railway station.
The scope of these projects, which will unfold according to a five-year plan, will be better understood in the coming days.
Premier Sunak "praised Ruto's pioneering leadership on climate issues" and urged Kenya to continue on the path of green growth.
