Farewell Carla, the granny of italian Malindi

A special woman that we loved so much

02-12-2021 by Freddie del Curatolo

The italian Malindi has lost its "Nonna".
Grandmother with a capital G and in the highest sense of the word, not only because Carla Cristina was a true matriarch, loved by three generations and especially of women, up to the great-grandchildren, but because she was the Italian grandmother that everyone wishes they had had: Outspoken, generous, strong and at times decisive but always conciliatory and with such a big heart that she often shielded herself and with her sharp, direct humor, so Milanese (and this is coming from someone who was born in the shadow of the Madunina...) she didn't give you a hard time, but always with a smile and a proactive desire to start a conversation, to give her vision of things and expect a contradiction.
It was precisely that great heart "made in her own way" and forged by a "wonderful" life, as she used to say, that decided to stop for a few hours in her Malindsian oasis by the sea, surrounded by some of her dearest affections, because it would have been difficult to have them all there, among her grandchildren, sisters and children acquired by her boundless pleasure in sharing. Her beloved "Maricri" first of all and the inseparable "second daughter" Giò.
Carla said goodbye to everyone at the venerable age of 94, while she was already preparing one of the usual dinners with friends and was already planning her 95th birthday for December 28, with a party no less cheerful and dreamy than the one for her 90th birthday, which many still remember.
Because in Malindi there are many compatriots who have always envied his lucidity, his never tamed enthusiasm, his desire to enjoy life without thinking about the passing of time. Many have met his smile and his lively eyes at a party, at an inauguration, at a sparkling and light evening of those that Malindi always offers. But also simply on the shore of the Indian Ocean, at lunchtime in front of fresh fish and a glass of white wine.
Kenya was in her destiny, since many years ago when she came to visit her brother who had opened a business in Lamu, on the island of Manda. Then her daughter Maria Cristina moved to Malindi and after some time Carla decided to move to what for her was "a magical place, like no other" as she used to say.
It was amazing how, when we would have dinner together or she would come to visit us (for a period of time, absolutely every other night) in our restaurant by the sea, we would find ourselves laughing spontaneously and with gusto, whether we were talking about Milan or when she had been elected Miss, or making fun of certain habits or grotesque poses of the Italians on the Kenyan coast.
We will miss her verve, her natural elegance, her flair and the final cherry to always play down everything. You were truly our favorite malindicated grandmother, Carla. Hugs to Cristina and the large family that her mom will continue to wisely rule from above.
