Malindi has now his plastic collecting point

A big bottle in Marine Park for recycling

23-12-2020 by Leni Frau

Finally, Malindi also has a "station" where you can deposit the plastic accumulated in private homes, hotels and other activities, but also collected on the beach and in green spaces and be sure that it will be recycled.
Since we started with Malindi Green And Blue the awareness campaign for separate waste collection, one of the biggest problems highlighted was what to do with all the plastic collected. Especially for those who collect on their own and don't know where to take it, or can't afford to travel from Malindi or Mambrui to Watamu each time.
So here at last is an initial solution, pending the construction of a large disposal and recycling centre, which is part of the World Bank's funding plans for the municipality of Malindi and which must be built, together with the reorganisation and sanitary safety of the Mayungu dump. The new collection point, marked by a large iron bottle that acts as a container, was inaugurated yesterday at the entrance to Malindi Marine Park by KWS Senior Warden of Malindi and Watamu Jane Gitau and is the result of a collaboration between Kenya Wildlife Service itself and Ecoworld Recycling of Watamu, which has already been collecting and recycling hard plastics for some time at its Dabaso centre, employing beach cleaners.
"All the hard plastic can be put in the bottle for recycling," explains Ecoworld's director, Steve Trott, "it can be an incentive for beach cleaning and be used by residents. It is part of a partnership between KWS and Ecoworld Recycling to help reduce plastic pollution in the Malindi and Watamu Marine Parks".
We now await the response of Malindi residents, who have often asked where they could take their plastic for disposal or recycling.
We would like to remind you that since last June, the use of single-use plastic has been banned in the national reserves, including the Marine Park.
