Nairobi, first city to visit in 2024 for Lonely Planet

Kenya's capital precedes Paris and Montreal

27-10-2023 by redazione

Mind you, this is not an award given by one of those associations that give rosettes to people who join their parish or for some political-strategic purpose, because it is universally acknowledged that the 'Lonely Planet' travel guide, besides being the best known and best-selling in the world, has always been the most impartial.

Well, for Lonely Planet, the must-visit city in 2024 is Nairobi!
For us, the growing fascination and the many different settings and facets of the Kenyan capital are nothing new, but the recognition of the world's number one guide, which has placed it at the top of the podium, ahead of such molochs as Paris, Montreal and Mostar, Bosnia, is yet another confirmation of its attractiveness.

Among the reasons given were that Nairobi 'has established itself as a global centre of culture' not only in Africa and 'for its unmissable travel experiences'.
According to the guide, the Kenyan capital offers a dynamic array of restaurants, street food and clubs, as well as a 'constant rotation of art and culture venues that fuel Nairobi's appeal'. The guide adds: 'A short distance away, the eponymous national park teems with wildlife,' making this metropolis the only one in the world that has savannah at its core. "It is the beating heart of Kenya, a vibrant concrete jungle surrounded by wildlife," writes Lonely Planet on its X profile.

"The sights, sounds, tastes and smells of Nairobi are a complete sensory experience. The elaborately decorated Matatu buses painted with ornamental graffiti, the dynamic assortment of restaurants, carts and cafes, and the constant rotation of art and cultural venues fuel a distinct freshness found only in Kenya's capital. Add to this the eponymous national park, rich in wildlife and easily accessible from the city centre, and you have an unforgettable trip,' adds the guide on its website.

Nairobi is not an easy city, but that is precisely its charm. There is nothing obvious, nothing trivial and every aspect is ready to surprise you. And more and more on the positive side of things, especially in this particular historical period.
We have not only repeated this many times, but have written a book about it: Nairobi (OgZero publishing).
