Rains coming in Kenya, the forecast

Weathermen: first bad weather will affect Nairobi

31-03-2021 by Freddie del Curatolo

According to the most reliable "bernacas" of the coast, the fishermen of Lamu, the big rains will arrive just after Easter, with a shower that will be followed by a short period of variable cloudiness. This instability could lead to an initial period of torrential rain, followed by another two weeks of sunshine between the end of April and the beginning of May, and then finally the rain will fall until the beginning of July.
According to the National Meteorological Service, however, in and around Nairobi this week there should be an announcement of heavy downpours and from then on the rainy season should start throughout the country. Around Easter the Rift Valley and Lake Victoria, then the coastal hinterland and finally the rest of the country, from the desert lands on the border with Somalia and Ethiopia, to the coast.
In Malindi and on the Kenyan coast, the rains are expected every year as a godsend. The great heat of recent weeks is making the land and livestock suffer, and the population is also suffering from water rationing, which can cause illnesses, particularly for the elderly and children. Unfortunately, there seems to be no solution to the cyclical closure of the taps, due to mismanagement and mechanical problems at the Baricho plant, on the Galana river, which serves the entire county of Kilifi.
In the fields of the immediate hinterland everything is ready for the sowing of maize, while in the seaside resorts there is still uncertainty about the wind, between the Tanga Mbili blowing from the open sea and the Kaskazi, which does not want to leave the field to the Kuzi, the humid monsoon wind that will have the task of introducing us into the rainy season.
But, as we know, with Jupiter Pluvio and the weather these days, it's impossible to be sure. All we can do now is wait, enjoy these beautiful sunny days as if they were our last, and relax. We'll have to wait and see, with our eyes on the sky and the clouds, which in Africa are always a beautiful sight.
