Saturday 14 Malindi back to monthly cleanup

Kazi Mtaani Govt program will be involved

13-11-2020 by Leni Frau

Responsible Malindi returns to the streets after eight months to clean up and raise awareness, but in compliance with the pandemic and restrictions in force.
The exercise of collecting waste and educating the community about the importance of separation and recycling as a possible source of income, after a year of perseverance and success, both media and real, had come to an abrupt halt with Kenya's lockdown last March.
It resumes this Saturday, 14 November and does so without calling all citizens to collect, because of the Covid-19 containment rules that provide for demonstrations and social meetings in public places for up to 200 people. The invitation is therefore to participate, from 8.15 am to 10 am, cleaning and collecting waste around your home or workplace at the same time as the Malindi Clean Up.
The actual exercise organized as always by PWAM and the Malindi Green And Blue movement, of which we are promoters, will instead see the participation of young unemployed people who are currently participating in the Government's "Kazi Mtaani" programme, which has offered daily work in counties and municipalities throughout the country to many young people who have no source of income during this period. In Malindi district there are 1500 employees of this social service created by Kenyatta to overcome the pandemic crisis, coordinated by supervisors.
The supervisors of Malindi will be present and each of them will bring a representation of their young people, chosen among those who have shown the most passion for the urban renewal of Malindi and above all they want to transform what until now has been a way to bring home a per diem, into a future profession. This would be possible by teaching them the importance of identifying among the waste those that can be reused and recycled, transformed for example into fuel (briquette) or other objects of common use, or even into art.
For this reason at the end of the Clean Up, which will start from Silversand (Coral Key area) and will arrive at the Casa delle Colonne (Fish Market), there will be a lesson dedicated to the young people of Kazi Mtaani, thanks to the collaboration with the Government and especially the DCC office in Malindi. Beach operators and their managements, Shella Groups and garbage collector and recycling association will be in place,
As in the past every month, there will be officers and police officers, managers of NEMA, Kilifi County Environment Department, KWS and the Public Health Office of Malindi, which will also give necessary indications about the emergency.
