Without spritz that's no more Kenya

Fundamental side effects on Suez blockage

30-03-2021 by Freddie del Curatolo

Thousands of foodstuffs are at risk of spoiling, and late deliveries could halt production that is fundamental to Kenya's economy.
The diagonal of the Suez Canal, which has kept half the world in suspense for days, is of particular interest to Italians in Kenya because of the diagonal of the spritz.
Containers laden with Aperol and Campari have been queuing up for days as if they were young people excited about Milan's canals before the lockdown.
In the meantime, in every supermarket in Malindi and Watamu, but also in the warehouses of every local importer and distributor, they were missing.
And luckily there is no tourism at this time! Restaurateurs who turned up at 8am in front of the shops, showing ready cash to make it clear that this time they were prepared not to 'mark up' (since cheques are hardly accepted by them...).
But also a lot of private individuals who could never give up the King of parties: shitty music, but well-made spritz, that's the rule in every holiday destination. Don't worry, the nightmare is over, the drink that outclassed dawa and caipirinha (which was also African as Letta is left-wing) will soon be back on the tables by the Indian Ocean.
"Without the spritz it's no longer Kenya" I heard a compatriot say yesterday.
It would be a bit like saying that without kebabs it is not Italy...but that is perhaps a bit more true.
