Kenya, now more 'travellers' than 'tourists

Boom in safaris and unseen adventures

12-06-2023 by Freddie del Curatolo

After the infamous global watershed of the pandemic, tourism on the African continent, as in other international destinations, has restarted well, but with some essential differences from the past.
Probably the enforced seclusion has increased the awareness of tourists, with a good percentage of them, probably 'surfing' the internet and informing themselves on social channels, becoming potential travellers.

What is the difference? We have discussed it many times: the tourist basically places light-hearted holidays among his priorities, the destination chosen on the basis of essential requirements that are comfort, ease of reaching the destination, a series of facilities (including perhaps a place where one can speak one's own language), as well as absolute relaxation and, last but not least, the satisfaction of the pleasures that are at the top of his list of 'desiderata'.
For example, those who in winter choose a trip outside their own country usually look for the warmth that is lacking in the tropical zone, unlike the temperate zone that covers Italy and the whole of the West, with the sea as a fundamental element of enjoyment.

In summer, on the other hand, the discourse is different. Those who decide to leave Europe and the Mediterranean are obviously not so interested in heat and sea, if not for the prices offered by the Red Sea, but prefer countries that can enrich their wealth of experiences, satisfy their souls and enliven their passions.
After Covid, this aspect seems to have been accentuated, and Kenya, according to the news that reaches us regarding bookings for the coming months, particularly from mid-July to the end of September, is being sought out not so much for the beach and sun, or for the classic holiday in a tourist village, but as an 'African experience', a plunge into nature, with reference above all to the savannah.

This explains, for example, the comeback of safaris. From June to September at the equator, after the great rains have ended, nature resurfaces in all its splendour and fortunately this year, after four worrying drought seasons, rainfall has returned to average.
This means green and rich savannahs, animals resuming their habits, with the eternal struggle between predators and herbivores, families of wild animals in their natural habitat becoming sedentary the moment they have food from the lush plants, as well as the epic wildebeest migration between the Masai Mara and the Serengeti in Tanzania, which remains one of the spectacles that a lover of Africa and the 'Kingdom of the Animals' should witness at least once a year.

The best safari agencies between Nairobi and the coast are already declaring "sold out" and some are even offering new, alternative and particularly exciting routes for Kenya's regulars, with new safaris and lesser-known parks.
As a result, destinations such as Watamu, Diani and Malindi, known especially for their seascapes, remain attractive as a fulcrum (today we would say "hub") to move around in search of the many and varied emotions that this country can reserve.
Then it is clear that a day 'butt in the air' sunbathing and basking on the white shoreline with a view of the coral reef, does not displease anyone. But the months of July, August and September, as more and more ex-tourists and neo-travellers know, are the ideal months to be enchanted by other wonders that make the trip and adventure much more than just a holiday.
