Bad weather, still no respite in Kenya

Counting the damage, without much hope of aid

23-11-2023 by redazione

At least ten more days of bad weather and instability in Kenya. This is what the East African meteorological experts predict, while the count of disasters and emergencies in the country continues to rise, and as always, Kenya is also among the luckiest regions, with Somalia having even more impressive figures, and Tanzania and Ethiopia also scourged.

While the number of dead touches seventy-one and the number of displaced families is close to 100,000, counties are counting the damage to infrastructures (bridges, roads, water and electricity conduits) and structures (schools, hospitals, public offices), while people find themselves without homes, businesses, or with situations for which they will need funds that are impossible for them to recover, in order to return to normality and in many cases to the work that provides survival.
Needless to say, in Kenya 'welfarism' is a word that does not yet exist and who knows if it will exist in the future, given the times around the world.

If flood victims and earthquake victims in Italy have to wait years before they see reimbursements and in the meantime receive aid, subsidies and prefabricated houses, in Kenya humanitarian aid is limited to the splendid emergency work of the Red Cross and food and medicine aid from associations and private individuals.
Yesterday, Kenya's Vice-President Rigathi Gachagua stated that the government will not provide funds for flood response efforts, saying that $65 million had already been allocated from Nairobi earlier to prepare for the arrival of the El Niño cyclone and should be spent accordingly.
