Kenya floods, death toll rises

Continuing emergency, also feared for diseases

21-11-2023 by Freddie del Curatolo

The death toll from the bad weather in Kenya continues unabated, in what is shaping up to be the worst 'little rain' season of the millennium in the entire Horn of Africa.
The number of bodies recovered by the Red Cross and Kenyan police has risen to 61, but eight people are still missing in the floods in Mombasa and the Tana river basin. Even in the Lake Victoria region, still scourged by the rains, the number of victims, 12 so far, is set to rise fatally.

On the coast, the most serious situation remains on the road between Diani (Ukunda) and the Tanzanian border, where the lifeless bodies of two officials of the Kenya Revenue Authority, who had been swept away by the fury of the water and mud in their car, were also recovered.

Added to the fatal damage was the destruction of houses and huts, with more than 80,000 families affected, half of which were left homeless and displaced in camps set up for the emergency. At the same time, the situation in the northwest regions is also dramatic. Across the country, again according to the Red Cross, 235 injured people are currently in medical facilities.

The government, through a message from Vice-President Rigathi Gachagua (leader Ruto flew to Germany to attend an international meeting in the context of the G20) has promised aid and the recovery of isolated communities with army helicopters, and one crashed to the ground yesterday afternoon in Wajir, also seriously injuring the soldiers on board. All families in the areas at risk, especially those along the river courses, have been ordered to leave their homes and move to safer areas.

In the next few days, according to experts from the National Meteorological Service, the rainfall is expected to diminish, but a few vehement isolated phenomena are expected, and above all, the level of the water basins shows no sign of decreasing. After the flooding emergency, moreover, the threat is posed by water- and mud-borne diseases, and parallel events such as animal deaths that infect the environment.
