Kenya restarts stronger and more peaceful

Fears and fake news overcome, problems lie elsewhere

19-08-2022 by Freddie del Curatolo

Kenya got back on track, with all its problems, after the week of waiting for the election results.
It ignored the fake news, the fabricated clashes, the exaggerations.
It listened to the appeals for peace and perhaps didn't even have all that much need to listen to them. Here, unlike in other countries with more experience of democracy and social life, one is still able to learn a lot from the recent past.
Of course, the past can also affect one: it cannot be denied that the fear of some uproar, especially of those who have a business open to the public in Nairobi or northern Kenya, was tangible.
And it was also right in the event that the protests could degenerate, not to be caught unprepared.

Many, however, and this was also the shared thought among those who have lived here for many years and among colleagues, had already noticed how a disinterest in politics had grown, unlike (abysmally) 15 years ago but also the previous 2017 elections. The alliance of historic opposition leader Raila Odinga with his former opponent Uhuru Kenyatta had done the rest. How does one remain a champion of the poor while espousing the cause of the symbol of power?
Despite this, however, 'baba' Odinga won a few tens of thousands of votes less than William Ruto and will now appeal to the courts.
And yet, as we have already had ample opportunity to say in words and videos, even on the day of the proclamation of the new president and the day after the announcement of the rejection of the results by the defeated, the protests were minimal, a few demonstrations that could happen, in those ways and places, even in a western country, and that's all.
Yesterday, the National Security Committee urged all citizens to resume normal activities and the trade associations of the country's various businesses thanked them.
They couldn't wait to roll up their sleeves and get back to work, because nowadays even Africa is learning that it is the only way to change one's life and that relying on politicians can hardly yield results equal to one's stubbornness and will to emerge.
Because if it is true that in this country poverty is immense, social inequalities are abysmal, unemployment is very high, and essential services such as health and education are lacking, it is also a fact that when you have nothing and you are crawling in the gutter of human dignity, you can only get up and try to walk, and it is easier to find someone in the same condition as you to lend a hand and try it together. Kenya is on the move again, and with it tourism, which has already suffered and had to experience two moods and the stark difference between reality and what the international media broadcast. We're off again! It has already happened after periods of real law and order problems, let alone after nothing has happened.
