The Italian press and the chaos that is not there

Sensationalism about nothing: post election quiet but not for our media

18-08-2022 by redazione

Here we go again. Even without a shred of negative news, with no deaths or injuries in Kenya's post-elections, the 'big' Italian media, such as La Repubblica and Corriere della Sera, are talking of chaos in Kenya, of a country at risk of civil war. They seem to have exhumed headlines from 14 years ago, when after the 27 December 2017 elections (in an entirely different scenario, amid tribalism and serious allegations of fraud) the chaos was real and led to more than 1,200 deaths.
Today, the situation is completely different, and anyone who knows even a little about the current affairs of this country, its social and political evolution, can understand how certain ghosts of the past are practically impossible to relive. Especially because of an electoral challenge. There would be plenty of other reasons to take to the streets and protest, starting with the food emergency, social inequalities, high prices and so on.
But our press once again covers its eyes and plugs its ears and goes for the easiest and least professional route: that of catching clicks, especially making those who are planning holidays in this country anxious. And the local (and also the Italian) tourism sector, which is already having a Sisyphean struggle to return to pre-covid levels.
Everything else on the matter is explained in our video below.
