This is not the first time we have applauded countrymen who choose the last week of August and the first two weeks of September for their holidays in Kenya.
According to our experience in the tourism industry, personal experience and opinions gathered from residents and hospitality and safari operators, this is one of the best times of the year to visit this country, for several reasons.
Firstly, the safaris: we are in the decisive and spectacular tail end of the great wildebeest migration and at a time when many other herbivores are also moving to seek the best areas to feed and breed. At the same time, the great predators are on the alert and the cruel, necessary, inexorable daily event of hunting and the struggle for survival attracts thousands of tourists from all over the world to natural settings that alone are worth 'the price of the ticket'.
Among the other reasons why those who come to Kenya during these weeks savour an almost total pleasure in the best that the African equator has to offer is the climate. The temperature remains cool, but the sun of the African spring (which does not exist, because there has never been a so-called 'half-season' here, but September is very much like it) peeps out more and more often and the air dries up of the residual humidity of the past rainy season.
Thus the water temperature in the Indian Ocean is perfect and a prelude to the well-being of healthy bathing, while the sun itself calls for a tan but does not exceed in its scorching, stripping power. It is also an excellent time for excursions to coastal creeks where environmental sustainability still provides timeless ravines sheltered by the beautiful wind blowing across the sea.
In short, if Kenya as we have been saying for years is all about discovering and touring, at this time of year it is a beauty within a beauty. Karibu Kenya, why wait for Christmas...
