You Khanga, the Italian-Kenyan fashion that helps the children of Mambrui

An initiative by two Italian designers with Kenya in their hearts

22-05-2015 by Freddie del Curatolo

An Italian summer under the banner of the 'You Khanga' creations, shoes and accessories created by two 'Africa-sick women' who have now also decided to help, with part of the proceeds from the sales of the splendid shoes designed with the typical fabrics of the 'mamas' of the Kenyan coast, the orphans of Mambrui.
"Our desire from the beginning was to use part of the proceeds from the You Khanga line in charity projects related to the women and children of Kenya," Veruscha Rossi, who together with her sister-in-law Benedetta Ceppi, recently launched a line of shoes and bags combining colourful African fabrics with Italian design, explains to Corriere della Sera.
"We chose to support the Asante Sana Roberto orphanage in Mambrui, which houses around 90 children, because we know the people who run it very well."
The story of this Mompreneur, or Mommypreneur, begins in the small Maremma village of Capalbio, where the family runs the well-known restaurant 'Il Frantoio'.
"I was lucky enough to stay a few years in Kenya," Veruscha recounts, "and watching Kenyan women using khangas to dress themselves, to carry their children and to do many other things, I thought it might be interesting to create objects with that rectangle of cloth."
A few years after returning to Italy, with her designer sister-in-law who is also very attached to Africa, the creative woman decided to create the 'You Khanga' line.
"I was enchanted by the vibrancy of the colours and the beauty of the patterns of these fabrics.
And in Italy we got a good response from both the public and the press. We are very satisfied."
The creator of the brand is full of enthusiasm and is particularly passionate about the creative part. As far as dissemination is concerned, the product is designed and finished in Italy and intended for a medium-high market. The new spring-summer collection also features shoes and sandals with heels this year.
A line that, besides dressing with elegance, will continue to bring support and hope to the orphans of Mambrui.
