Kenyans wants Govt to reopen soon

Infotrak research: people are stressed

23-06-2020 by redazione

Most Kenyan citizens would like the government to reopen county boundaries and lift the curfew. This is reported by a survey by Infotrak Research that interviewed a significant sample of Kenyans from different social groups, geographical areas and ages.
The survey found that Kenyans are proven both economically and mentally, that they are suffering blockage stress and that the Covid-19 emergency, which in Kenya is still more virtual than tangible, for the few deaths and hospitalizations in the country, is creating other situations perhaps even more dangerous and dramatic.
"With the increase in unemployment, salary cuts and the few prospects in the world of work - explains the head of research of Infotrak Walter Nyabundi - most Kenyans have seen the economic part of the pandemic".
The survey offers a pitiless look at the population, showing that most people are unable to make ends meet, a situation that is also causing mental distress. According to the research, 41% of Kenyans consider the coronavirus merely a personal financial issue, while 35% consider it both a personal financial issue and a health emergency.
This survey shows that the biggest concern for Kenyans is having to pay the rent at the end of the month, and subordinately comes work, especially for those who had a permanent job or lived off trade and tourism.
Eighty-seven percent of Kenyans who took part in the survey said that the cost of food had increased, while 68% said they were unable to buy kerosene, gas and coal for domestic use.
79 percent said they could no longer make money available to dependents at home, while 67 percent are unable to pay for utilities such as electricity and water.
At the same time, the study shows that 74% of Kenyans living in urban areas are unable to pay their rent on time, while 72% are unable to pay their house rent in full.  At the national level the latter figure stands at 63%.
The study shows that 75% of Kenyans are unable to pay formal and informal loans, while 67% are no longer able to buy medicines.
Another significant finding, however, is that 47% of all Kenyans said they are currently dependent on food donations from wealthy people," Nyabundi said.
According to the study, most Kenyans said they have not yet benefited from the reduction in VAT from 16% to 14% - with 79% in employment, followed by pensioners (73%) and the unemployed (71%).
Among those surveyed, 68% said they felt confused, while 63% felt "trapped".
According to Infotrak the Kenyans are also losing interest in the news about Covid-19 as they had done in the first two months after the advent of the pandemic in Africa.
One interviewee out of two says the news is repetitive and boring, others don't think it's interesting or easy to interpret, but only one Kenyan out of 10 thinks it's exaggerated.
