Even a warthog on the Serengeti would understand that local tourism is not enough to keep the tourism industry in East Africa on its feet.
Clearly, launching on those who can travel, perhaps even avoiding planes and airports or other situations of aggregation, in this period, seemed the only viable logic, but those who continue to focus on this instead of speeding up vaccination campaigns and giving confidence to countries that are still very skeptical about health security, especially in Kenya and Tanzania, is not focused on the real solution.
Meanwhile, the East African Community (EAC) has confirmed the loss of 92% of revenue in the tourism sector due to the pandemic.
A figure higher than the already pessimistic expectations, with arrivals dropping from about 7 million to just over 2 million.
"Tourism is definitely the sector that has suffered the most from the economic crisis related to the pandemic," said EAC Secretary Peter Mathuki, adding that while waiting for the reopening to business in general, all parties interested in cooperating should come together to better market the destinations and services of the entire region and be able to ensure the fastest possible recovery of the sector.
"Despite the fact that the pandemic reversed the gains we had made in the tourism sector," Mathuki said, "we are quite confident that through collective and collaborative efforts, we should be able to return to pre-pandemic performance levels and even do better within a period of less than five years.
The limitation of these countries, however, seems to be precisely their ability to create a unique "East African" brand to promote the uniqueness of the region, from the savannah and large parks with their wildlife, for which Kenya and Tanzania are unrivaled in the world, to the white beaches of the Indian Ocean and the mountains and forests.
Instead, the two countries insist on national or cross-border tourism campaigns focused on their fellow countrymen.
"As can be seen, the middle class in Africa has grown rapidly and largely comprises young people who are eager to travel and explore," Mathuki explained, "East Africa should be their first destination. They should take advantage of the definitely preferential costs and rates as citizens of the East African community."
During the Arusha EXPO held last weekend in the Tanzanian city, dedicated to pan-African tourism, the EAC secretary urged member states to focus on cross-cutting products such as conference tourism, sports tourism (golf, for example, is gaining ground) and cultural (!) tourism.
