On Sunday evening, Kenya will be one of the countries in the world where you can fully enjoy the solar eclipse and the phenomenon of the big red moon. East Africa, together with Central Asia and Australia, are the areas best “exposed” to the phenomenon, as experts explain.
For this reason, the Ministry of Tourism has invited all travelers and hikers to prepare for an experience that will be one with the spectacle of landscapes now internationally celebrated as some of the most fascinating and already lunar on the planet.
The moon will rise at around 7:45 p.m. local time and will last for about 82 minutes at the equator.
As the Kenya Tourist Board notes, with minimal light pollution, clear equatorial skies, and unique landscapes, some places in Kenya offer a unique emotional experience, but are also an attraction for ‘astrotourism’ enthusiasts.
Astrotourism is an emerging niche market that combines stargazing, astronomy education, and the experience of unspoiled night skies.
What are the best areas for observing the sky, moon, and stars?
First and foremost is the Samburu region, which, not surprisingly, will host an astro-tourism initiative on Sunday, with guided tours of the night sky, astrophotography expeditions, educational workshops, and camping experiences under the stars, all designed to immerse visitors in the wonders of the cosmos.
Next is the Maasai Mara, although slightly below the equator, thanks to its linear landscape that offers an incomparable view of the sky, and already very popular for its ancestral peace and the beauty of nature and its animals.
Other places where visitors are invited to observe the phenomenon of the big red moon on Sunday are “The Landing” in Nanyuki, the Ileret campus of the Turkana Basin Institute, and the Fort Place Grill in Kabete, in Kiambu County.
As for the coast, the show is guaranteed at Watamu from Paparemo Beach and Jacaranda Bay, as well as from Mida Creek, where light pollution is even less.
The mouth of Kilifi Creek is another enchanting place, and the beaches of Tiwi and Diani on the south coast also have their say.
Finally, in Lamu, there is fortunately still little nighttime light pollution, and in some parts of the archipelago, you can enjoy the combination of sea and sky without too many visual obstacles to the enchantment.
