A large fire broke out around 1.30 pm local time in the Coral Key area of Malindi.
The arrival of the fire brigade is awaited, but they have problems with their vehicles, according to reliable sources. The fire-fighting unit of the Malindi airport has also been alerted and in the meantime residents and other local businesses have rushed to help and bring pumps to draw water from the pools, to save what can be saved and prevent the spread of flames from makuti to makuti, in the villas of the structure and the nearby residential complexes. UPDATE 3 pm: Flames have enveloped the oasis village where the fire may have started, as well as nearby Key Park. Some structures are collapsing.
UPDATE 3.30pm: The fire appears to have started in Oasis Village which is severely damaged, but many cottages in the adjoining Key Park have also been destroyed. Coral Key and Harbour Key appear to be safe, damage to villas across the road also contained.
The fire brigade has now arrived, with considerable and culpable delay. No episodes of vandalism are reported, also because the arrival of the police, unlike that of the fire brigade, was timely.
