Free: success of the kenyan "summer song"

Funny and catchy pop-hit by The Jacks

26-05-2021 by redazione

And Kenyans too learned to craft what we call "summer songs".
There are no seasons here in Kenya and there is no bathing fashion of consuming pop-hits under the umbrella, but "Free" by the group The Jacks featuring Zimbabwean-born Scandinavian singer Prince Mpedzisi is smashing the charts not only in Kenya and has reached almost half a million Youtube views.
Credit for the catchy and pleasant song (which in its original version, which you can listen to below, doesn't even wink at the tackiest 'disco') goes to a group of influencers and social content creators who launched the song with a cute video.
The message is simple but hard-hitting, encouraging people to pursue their dreams while staying true to their values, without getting imprisoned and becoming slaves to a stressful life.
"Raha wajipa mwenyewe", say Kenyans, meaning be the master of your own happiness.
Behind the production is the "longa manus" of Julius Ochieng, creative at Wololo TV who launched the song and video through a partnership with online betting platform "Betsafe".
"Our content is focused on spreading joy and happiness," explained Ochieng, "We live in times when everything seems difficult, so we decided to make people feel good.
The song, which is already available on digital platforms, is selling beyond expectations and while waiting for concert venues to reopen, The Jacks and Prince will perform on the most-watched television channels NTV and Citizen Tv.
"It was an honour to collaborate with my Kenyan brothers," said singer Prince Mpedzisi, "It's not often we get to create such beautiful work.
May this piece augur well for many musicians or aspiring musicians in and around Nairobi to rise up from the undergrowth of the 'boom-bum-bum' mire.
