Pandemic has not stopped this important process

There is no Covid-19 emergency that holds (luckily), the battle for the protection of the environment of Kenya goes on: from next June 5 no more plastic along the beaches, in parks and nature reserves, in forests and in general in every protected area of the country.
With a statement issued yesterday to national institutions and associations signed by his Chief of Staff Najib Balala, the Kenyan Ministry of Tourism has confirmed that the decision on the environment taken twelve months ago by President Kenyatta, will become effective from Friday, June 5, 2020.
"Following the President's announcement on June 5, 2019 on the ban on the use of disposable plastics in all our protected areas," the statement says, "we bring to your attention that the ban will begin to take effect on June 5, 2020. The Government is committed, according to what is enshrined in the Constitution of Kenya 2010, article 42, to ensure and provide all Kenyans with a clean and healthy environment and, through article 69, to eliminate all processes and activities that degrade the environment".
Plastic bottles and other containers will not only be banned in national parks and nature reserves, but also on all beaches along the coast.
"The Wildlife Conservation and Management Act (WCMA) 2013 defines a "protected area" as a geographical, recognized, dedicated and managed area through regulations or other effective means to achieve long-term conservation of nature and its ecosystem services and cultural values. The statement continues.
The ban underlines the government's commitment to addressing the threat of plastic pollution, in line with the various provisions of the law on waste management and conservation of natural resources and ecosystems, and Kenya's milestone in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030.
"The Ministry therefore wishes to urge you all to work together for the full implementation of this ban on disposable plastic in all our protected areas," concludes the statement signed by Minister Balala, "including national parks, beaches, forests and other conservation areas.
In the coming days, sanctions and penalties for offenders will presumably be announced, undoubtedly the implementation of the decree announced last year by the Government is a further step forward to improve the environment, the life of many land and marine animal species and the potential attractiveness of Kenya, as well as the health of all.
