In a statement released on August 4, the Kenya Tourism Federation (KTF) explained that, although the requirement is provided for under the Social Health Insurance Act, 2023, it has not yet come into effect, as the formal commencement notice and the full regulatory framework required for its implementation have not yet been issued.

According to the Federation, under Kenya's legal system, a law passed by Parliament and assented to by the President often requires additional steps before it becomes enforceable. These include implementing regulations and the definition of operational procedures, as well as, in this case, the designation of authorised insurance providers, the cost of the cover, the purchasing process, and the verification mechanisms.

The recent publication in the Kenya Gazette, which sets the minimum required health insurance coverage at US$50,000, therefore represents only one of the necessary steps before the requirement can be brought into force.

The Kenya Tourism Federation also announced that it is already engaging with the Government to seek clarification on two key issues: the recognition of international insurance policies already held by visitors and the implementation timeline for the new requirement.

For the time being, therefore, nothing changes for those planning a trip to Kenya.
