On the one hand, the undoubted inconvenience for those who have to travel from Kilifi to Mombasa at this time, on the other hand, the positive certainty that the work on doubling the lanes of the so-called 'highway' leading from Kenya's second city to Malindi has entered a more than advanced stage. Today, the majority of tourists and regular visitors to Watamu, Malindi, Kilifi and Mambrui, from Moi International Airport, instead of crossing over as they did before the pandemic, head north thanks to the new junction to the highway to Nairobi, turn off at the town of Mazeras and from there continue along the hilly road that passes through Kaloleni and comes out just before Kilifi.
Today it becomes an almost obligatory diversions because anyone venturing along the coastal road, after the town of Mtwapa would find himself in the middle of a series of detours that would take him onto gritty and dusty dirt roads. But at the same time he would be able to verify in person, as we did at Malindikenya.net, the progress of the works (some sections already asphalted, but not yet usable) that are part of a larger project that should connect the Tanzanian town of Bagamoio, north of the metropolis Dar Es Salaam, with Malindi, via the southern Kenyan coast and bypassing Mombasa thanks to a bypass and the new bridge that is being built thanks to the contribution of the Japanese. The coastal highway project, on the other hand, is being financed by the African Development Bank.
