Kenya less peaceful, but not for tourists

Loses a position in the Global Peace Index

26-08-2025 by redazione

The annual report on peace and security in nations, the Global Peace Index 2025, was published yesterday by the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP).
According to this year's data, Kenya has not made any progress in terms of national security and internal peace. In fact, it has dropped one place, from 126 to 127, out of 163 countries surveyed. This places it in the orange zone, i.e. not in the red zone of danger, which is occupied primarily by countries at war (the lowest-ranked countries include Israel, Russia, Ukraine, Sudan, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Somalia, among others) and other countries known for their political instability, such as Myanmar, Burkina Faso, and the Central African Republic.

However, reading the entire report, Kenya's ranking this year is justified by last year's anti-government protests, especially those not politicized by young people protesting corruption and lack of freedom of expression, and by issues related to its borders, where two of the world's most populous refugee camps are located, Dadaab and Kakuma.
In addition, there are extrajudicial killings by the police and ongoing ethnic feuds in the north-eastern regions and on the border with Somalia.
It must be said that, as far as the perception of safety by foreigners and especially tourists is concerned, Kenya remains a tourist destination without restrictions and without a plethora of international travel warnings, and even the incidence of violence and robbery against foreigners is absolutely in line with the international and European average.
In this global ranking, for the record, Italy is thirty-third, recovering one position from last year, but remains only nineteenth in Europe, which is not an excellent performance.
