The Kenyan government will launch the country's first international Maasai festival this year.
Per organizers' word, the event will be held in the Maasai Mara National Reserve in August, with dates yet to be decided, taking advantage of coinciding with the annual wildebeest migration.
Tourism and Wildlife Minister Peninah Malonza also spoke at the launch of the initiative in recent days in Nairobi. Malonza noted that culture is one of the major tools used by nations as a source of power for international diplomacy and that cultural diplomacy, is a key player in international relations as it makes it easier for nations to understand each other by showcasing their traditions and customs.
"Maasai culture is one of the most unique cultures, it showcases our nation internationally and plays a huge role in our tourism sector," Malonza said.Few African cultures can boast the universal fame and appeal that the Maasai have earned both locally and internationally.
In addition to Maasai social, cultural, sports and folklore activities and fashion shows and performances that will be presented during the week-long celebration, sponsors will have the opportunity to showcase their services and products. For this reason, the Maa Education Trust, which is among the organizers of the festival, is already committed to raising funds for the realization of the event. "In addition, it will be an opportunity for environmentalists from around the world to meet and discuss the conservation of the reserve," the minister added.
The event was attended by Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Korir Sing'oei, East African Community Secretary General Peter Mathuki and Kajiado County Governor Joseph Ole Lenku, among others, as well as envoys from various foreign countries. The organizers' intention is to repeat the festival every year.
