In a statement released to the national media, Kenya's Minister of the Interior and National Security, Kithure Kindiki, said that yesterday's protests were not orchestrated by 'Generation Z' who had taken to the streets in the first two days of protests, but by 'criminal gangs masquerading as peaceful protesters with the intention of looting public and private property'. Criminals against whom the state will use an iron fist if the same thing happens again tomorrow or Sunday.
The minister warned that security agencies are on high alert to intercept and foil any attempt to harm the public and attack critical infrastructure, adding that the government has launched investigations into the alleged destruction of property by the thugs and action will be taken against the perpetrators.
"The organisers of today's orgy of violence in parts of Nairobi, Mombasa and many other parts of the country are allegedly planning to repeat the anarchic mayhem and cruel looting on Thursday and Sunday this week," Kindiki noted. "Upon completion of the ongoing investigations and visuals viewed, the planners, perpetrators and financiers of the large-scale arson and violent robberies will be brought to court," he added.
The minister's communiqué takes for granted the repetition of the protest demonstrations, no longer peaceful but with devastating intentions, on Thursday 4 and Sunday 7 July.
Sunday's is an important date, already evoked by many in the social network: 'Saba Saba', the famous 7 July of the protests against President Moi's regime that led to multipartyism in the early 1990s. Also last year, in the agitations taken to the streets by Raila Odinga's opposition, there were incidents and deaths.
"The government commends all law enforcement officers who continue to carry out their challenging mandate to prevent crime and protect life and property," Kindiki stressed, "this reign of terror against the people of Kenya and the impunity of dangerous criminal gangs must end at any cost.
