Protests that show no sign of ending in Kenya, protests increasingly targeted at the political class and by now not only the central government, but also the regional county administrations, with demonstrations in front of the governors' offices, if not outside their homes, to demand “accountability and transparency”, in two words “Stop corruption”.
Demonstrations that had been announced by the now recognised leaders of the so-called ‘Generation Z’, including reporter and activist Boniface Mwangi, as once again ‘peaceful’.
Generation Z who, however, warned their peers of yet another possible infiltration by thugs and thugs hired by someone inclined to discredit the movement and pass it off as violent. It would be nice, as happens in truly democratic countries, to be able to see young people in the streets singing, dancing, asking the government to change course with placards and slogans, not clashes and violence, often caused by the behaviour of the police.
Yesterday, the tactics of the security forces, orphaned by their Inspector General, Japhet Koome, who resigned a few days ago, showed an attempt, not entirely successful, to prevent rather than to intervene aggressively: they immediately tried to prevent the demonstrators from marching, especially in the centre of Nairobi, firing tear gas to disperse the crowd, already as soon as the first people arrived in the CBD.
Tear gas on peaceful demonstrators who only had the Kenyan flag and placards with their slogans in their hands, shots with live bullets from running trucks, including one that injured a journalist, Catherine Wanjeri, who was doing her job in Nakuru.
An aggressive tactic that proved to be a boomerang, so much so that the protests continued for a good part of the day and the confusion allowed vandals and the usual ill-intentioned to carry out raids and damage, especially in the capital's hinterland towns.
Defying even Kenyan court orders, the police continued to use live bullets and water cannons, and in the capital's suburbs the clashes took an ugly turn, with several people injured and many arrested. By the end of the evening, there were three official casualties, but the count is likely to rise again. For human rights organisations, there are already 51 since the start of the protests.
In other cities, Nakuru, Nyamira, Baringo and in the Lake Victoria region, there were serious incidents and clashes, the balance of which is being updated.
Quieter, as usual, was the situation on the coast. Less peaceful protests were limited to a few burnt tyres and stones in the middle of the road, which were immediately removed by the security forces.
In the ‘business as usual’ tourist destinations, with Watamu and Diani completely quiet, a peaceful parade in Malindi and some more unrest in the capital Kilifi, due to protests against Governor Mung'aro.
