The Senate last night gave the green light to the removal of the vice-president of the current government, Rigathi Gachagua, implementing the so-called ‘impeachment’.
Gachagua, a member of the Kikuyu ethnic group and a key ally in the electoral campaign that brought William Ruto to power, had already been found guilty of 11 serious offences by the National Assembly, our Chamber of Deputies. It took only four in the Senate to confirm his impeachment: abuse of office, incitement to tribal hatred, corruption and contempt of the constitution.
In the afternoon, during the vote, Gachagua fell ill and was hospitalised in Nairobi, leaving the Senate where he was still to be heard by the committee.
As a result, the proceedings were suspended and eventually delayed, with defence lawyers walking out in protest.
The most likely successor appears to be the current Minister of Interior and National Security, Kithure Kindiki, also a Kikuyu.
