The adventure and big heart of an Italian tourist in Watamu

A touching, unique, Italian-Kenyan Easter story

01-04-2024 by redazione

A story that has something incredible and demonstrates the great heart and generosity of Italians in poor and developing countries, happened during the Easter holidays to one of our tourists in the seaside town of Watamu, on the coast of Kenya.
The 59-year-old man, originally from Pescia, in the province of Pistoia, had booked a week-long holiday in a well-known resort overlooking the Indian Ocean.
One evening, with a compatriot he met in the same hotel, he decided to go out to experience the resort's nightlife.
He stumbled upon a party with music at one of the many beach clubs in Watamu.
One beer led to another and it was natural to make the acquaintance of the locals, especially young girls who spent the evenings dancing in the clubs and looking for their 'prey'.

The Italian evidently does not disdain and points at one of the more attractive girls, who move sinuously on the improvised dance floor of the chiringuito.
He draws her to him with a smile, offers her a drink and tries to express himself in his very stunted English.
Of course, he knows very well that many of those exotic beauties are there to ply the oldest trade in the world, even if they do so in a sweetened environment and are definitely prettier than those found in Italy along the provincial roads.
And here the incredible happens!
The girl speaks five languages perfectly, including Italian, because she is a university student from Nairobi who, like him, is on holiday in Watamu to coincide with Easter when the university is closed!
What a beautiful coincidence and what luck! Among so many 'fireflies', luring single men for purely economic reasons, the Italian happened upon a beautiful girl unlike any other!
"You can't imagine how many sacrifices I make in order not to fall into certain easy temptations,' Jennifer (the name is fictitious, but not that much...) told her in Italian, 'in fact, at the end of the holiday I will lack the money to go back to Nairobi, and to buy some books that are indispensable to prepare for an important exam on banking law and financial markets.

Although there was no request, the Italian's generosity ensured that the girl could continue her studies and, you won't believe it, a great love was also born in those days, thanks to which the 59-year-old Tuscan and the 22-year-old Kenyan continue to keep in touch from a distance.
With some unpleasant news, but not all unwelcome to our compatriot: the girl did not pass her exams and has no possibility to support herself in her studies because her mother has become seriously ill, so she has moved to Watamu, awaiting the return of her new boyfriend, to build a future together and at the same time help her sick mother and also her brother, who has temporarily moved into the house he rented in Watamu with a generous loan from the Italian (after all, how can you 'help them in their house' if they don't have a house? ) and where he will gladly host him, also finding in the house a very sweet little one-and-a-half-year-old nephew, whom he has to mother because his brother's wife died in childbirth.
Painful stories but which bring with them great humanity and a sense of resurrection, on this Angel Monday which, coincidentally, falls on the first of April.
