Women's power increases in Kenya

WEF report indicates improvements in empowerment

15-07-2022 by Leni Frau

Even in an ancestrally male chauvinist country like Kenya, women are emancipating themselves and gaining spaces and advantages towards gender equality.
According to the World Economic Forum report, released yesterday, Wednesday 13 July, Kenya is among the top ten countries in the world in the special ranking that shows the progress made by women.

Kenya was ranked 57th among 146 countries globally. Overall, Rwanda appears to be the most virtuous African nation, while on a global level, Iceland takes the 'gold medal' for the umpteenth time.
The WEF report indicates that women's participation in the country's economy has improved significantly, from position 84 in 2021 to sixth overall.

The report focused on gender equality in various sectors, including economics, politics, education and health. It also looked at gender-based gaps in access to resources and opportunities in countries, regardless of the resources available in each country.

The survey found that at least 13.20 per cent of businesses in Kenya today are female-dominated. The government has outlined policies that have contributed to gender equality in the country. The National Policy on Gender and Development aims to create a just, equitable and transformed society free from gender discrimination in all spheres of life.

The State Gender Department of the Ministry of Public Service, Youth and Gender Policy is responsible for promoting gender equality and women's empowerment in Kenya.

There are obviously still many dark areas and much room for improvement, especially in the political sphere. The two-thirds rule enshrined in the Constitution guarantees that women are part of the decision-making process in parliament: however, Kenyan legislators have not yet been able to operationalise the legal provision.

The incidence of women in the economy, in productive sectors such as commerce, is still low, while Kenya scores fairly well for access to health.
