Never as at this time of year, if there is a coastal resort where the sea is wonderful, it is Malindi. And as always, there will be few people to enjoy the spectacle of the Indian Ocean in the town, which is depopulating itself of August tourists and preparing to live sleepily in anticipation of the ‘long-term’ holidaymakers who arrive from November and usually stay for ‘the time of a visa renewal’, and then complete during the Christmas and New Year holidays.
But September and October are the months when the sea in Malindi, thanks to the wind of the Kusi wet season, is extraordinarily beautiful.
Its shades of blue and azure stand out in the nature of the beaches and shoreline vegetation, especially from Vasco Da Gama Point to the Marine Park, but also at Mayungu.
The resort town, compared to neighbouring Watamu and Mambrui, does not usually shine with its beautiful coastline and crystal-clear waters,
compared to the magical and varied bays of Watamu and the long golden beach of Che Chale.
Instead, from late August, thanks to the currents that turn in the opposite direction at the mouth of the Sabaki River, Malindi can compete with the two famous beach destinations.
The Indian Ocean offers surprising iridescent hues and crystal-clear water, which unfortunately from December, when the dry season wind, the Kaskazi, sets in, we will see less often.
At the Marine Park, where by paying the entrance fee one can walk on the beach and swim, these days there is the usual atmosphere of freedom and integration and Kenyan holidaymakers particularly like to linger between the shade of the casuarinas and the moored boats. It is worth enjoying the sea in Malindian September with a day at Kilili Baharini, for example, or the Olimpia Club.
Not forgetting, of course, Watamu. Paparemo Beach (always open and swimmable for guests) is one of those almost algae-free beaches, which at this time of year always abound because of the current, and Jacaranda Bay, with its sand atolls is another unique landing place. But right now, Malindi is good for the soul and for those who love iodine and ablutions...waiting to return to enjoy the unparalleled charm of what has now become the top destination on the Kenyan coast, not only for Italians.
