No water, Tsavo facing extinction in 15 years

Kenya conservationists warns counties: "act quickly"

22-07-2017 by redazione

The efforts made so far to ensure water to Tsavo National Park and its ecosystem may not be enough.
The closest savannah to the Kenya coast threatens to extinction in 15 years unless seriously created irrigation systems and new dams.
Natural water sources, Tsavo, Voi and Bur rivers are drying out, Jipe Lake, which was once permanent and now seasonal, has lost 10 meters of depth over the years.
To this must be added the increase in the fauna that is more resistant to thirst and the height of those who can not do it, with misunderstandings in biodiversity and consequent mutation also of plant species.
The latest warning has been launched in recent days by the President of the Tsavo Heritage Foundation, Jacob Kipongoso.
"Twelve counties are interested in Tsavo Est and Tsavo West," Kipongoso said, "but none of them have ever allocated adequate funds to protect this fundamental resource and not just for tourism. During the election campaign, I have not yet heard a candidate speak widespread about the environment, but the counties allocate little more than a million to safeguard the territory, of the 4 billion that they have available. This means that water and trees do not interest, better build six-lane highways. "
Conservatives, gathered at Taita Hills, immediately after the election called for a meeting with the twelve governors of the counties that cross Tsavo to do something as soon as possible.
"If we do not act immediately after extreme droughts like this year, it takes five to fifteen years to reverse the worsening process. If we start losing 20 elephants a week because of drought, you can not wait any more time ".
