Thea's dream in Watamu is increasingly a reality

The interesting prospects of beach cleanup

12-08-2023 by Leni Frau

Little Thea's dream in Watamu is increasingly becoming everyone's reality. "I do it for you" is the name of the foundation she created with the help of her parents to clean up the beaches of the renowned Kenyan tourist destination from plastic and other waste coming from the sea and also set a good example for tourists and locals, as well as saving the lives of many marine species.

Just a few weeks after its launch, to which we devoted a nice on-the-spot report (click here to read the previous article), the initiative coordinated by the enterprising 10-year-old girl's father, hospitality entrepreneur Giuseppe Bonasera, owner of the Barracuda resort, currently under renovation, and manager of the Bravo Club in Jacaranda Bay, is amplifying and has taken root at other beaches as well.

Initially it was only the resort staff who were involved in the daily cleanup, and under the push of Thea and Bonasera's team, tourists joined in as well. Now the foundation, given the amount of work and the participation of other resorts, has managed to hire six more people for cleanup operations and is traveling at the rate of 30 bags of trash a day. The goal is soon to be able to pay at least 20 operators, thus also creating jobs.
Not only that, Bonasera has also created Kristal, a company that produces hotel chemistry and dedicated lines, recyclable and also with various essences that, mixed according to the customer's tastes, can create the exclusive bouquet for each facility. Much of the proceeds from the sale of these products are used for plastic collection bags.

This will trigger a virtuous circle based not only on cleaning Watamu, but also on recycling, including collection containers and their reuse. "Thea's enthusiasm has been contagious," explains the Roman entrepreneur and father of the founder of "I do it for you," "now a reality is being born that can not only improve Watamu but can create a union of intentions between tourist facilities that navigate in the same direction, that of environmental protection and conscious tourism, to attract even more people in love with Africa and its beauty.

That is why it is flattering that other facilities are also participating and that there is the possibility of further expansion and reaching agreements with those who are involved in recycling plastic, as well as thinking of buying machinery to press and shred it.
"The initiative started by my daughter is not meant to be something isolated to show off or add value to our activities," Bonasera explains, "but a way for 'everyone to do it for others' and for Watamu. Anyone is welcome, the goal is to have clean and livable beaches and ocean."
