FIRST EPISODE

Kenya has its origins on an island, as has often been the case throughout the world: ports, cultural mixing, and trade on the ‘fertile liquid plain’.
An island city that never sleeps. Mombasa is that island city, and its history, dating back to the early years AD, is steeped in trade, battles, sultans and slaves, colonisers and pirates, sorcerers and vengeful sons. Blending historical research and legends, this is the first episode in the story of Kenya’s second city. Not a lesson. An adventure.

SECOND EPISODE

For centuries, Mombasa has been one of humanity’s waiting rooms. Persians, Omanis, Arabs, Indians, Austronesians, Bantu from Zaire, Chinese, Turks and, later, the Portuguese all arrived here.
Some traded in spices or slaves, others prayed, others plundered, whilst still others simply stopped off because the monsoon had taken a turn for the worse or because, having passed through so often, the place had begun to feel like home. And in the name of a new sense of belonging, Mombasa has learnt to live with it all. Drawing on historical research and legends, the second episode in the history of Kenya’s first port.

THIRD EPISODE

A British vice-admiral who wanted to chart the seas in an ocean ruled by a sultan; a Swahili dynasty that would ally itself with anyone rather than yield to Omani rule in Mombasa; a young South African governor whose name will go down in the city’s history; and two German missionaries who… These are the main characters of the third episode of the History of Mombasa, set shortly before the ‘Scramble for Africa’ and the era of colonialism.

FOURTH EPISODE

What could two islands, separated by eight thousand kilometres, two continents and three seas, possibly have in common?
And what, in the second half of the nineteenth century, connects a Scottish merchant and a German explorer who would never meet? And finally, what does a German Jewish governor working for the Ottoman Empire have to do with it? Quite simply, the partition of Africa and the birth of Kenya… With this in mind, Freddie del Curatolo continues his podcast on the History of Mombasa.

FIFTH EPISODE

On 1 July 1895, the UK government proclaimed the East African colonial protectorate and declared that Mombasa would be its capital. Its glory as the ‘gateway to East Africa’ would last 12 years – just long enough to build the ‘Lunatic Express’ and see it set off towards what, having started out as a waystation, would go on to take its place as the key city of British Kenya. This episode brings Freddie del Curatolo’s podcast miniseries on the history of Mombasa to a close.
