Matatu, a funny, somewhat extreme African adventure

Kenya's colourful, lively and dangerous transport

22-02-2025 by Freddie del Curatolo

A fan of public transport in Kenya, one of those Italians who boast not only of travelling with a rucksack from the Andes to the Siberian steppe, but also of going into danger so as to be able to talk about it with full knowledge of the facts, said to me ‘oh well, but in Kenya aren't lions and leopards more frightening than matatus?’.
‘But what does that have to do with it?’ I replied, “you don't get on the lion!”.
Indeed, the colourful public transport in East Africa on the one hand attracts, precisely because of its genuine anarchy, chaotic vitality and cheap travel, on the other hand, judging by the statistics, it is not an adventure that everyone will be able to tell.
The 14-seater minibuses (normally with the regulation number of broken windows) are certainly more beautiful to look at than to use, especially for western foreigners. But it's worth talking about them and, after describing their story and their world in the book ‘Nairobi’, I decided to talk about them and ‘sing’ about them together with my ‘Re Mida And The Creek’, who every week now give us tasty musical pearls from Kenya.
Enjoy watching and listening!
