We have reached the penultimate episode of the second (and final) season of the podcast on the history of Italians in Kenya. Over 30 episodes, starting with the legends of the first sailors who reached Africa in the 1300s, we have journeyed all the way to the present day, recounting the stories and behind-the-scenes accounts of countless compatriots—from the most famous and celebrated to the least known. A series conceived, written, narrated, and even set to music by Freddie del Curatolo, the result of his research, direct and indirect testimonies, and life lived in this country.
In this episode, we discuss the decline of a place, which can occur independently of humanity’s own decline and be accelerated by a series of events that alter its reputation and appeal. It is not the place’s fault, but rather that of those who, by not respecting it enough, make it more vulnerable to external events, and of those who, rushing about like madmen, see it as so focused on the future that they lose touch with the past and the present. Malindi’s decline also stems from these considerations, and from the story of a brilliant, beloved, and controversial Italian who rushed too much: Marco Vancini.
